By using MapLit you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

MapLit is currently operated by an independent founder rather than an incorporated company. The operating entity, the governing law and the venue for disputes will be named here before public launch, reviewed by counsel. Until then, treat MapLit as an early-stage product.

MapLit turns research papers into a living map: it reads a PDF, extracts what the paper is about, gives it a short memorable label, and places it on a structure that grows with your library. It also provides a reader with highlights, notes, and an AI assistant.

MapLit is a research tool. It is not a library, a publisher, or a source of legal, medical, financial or academic advice.

You sign in with a one-time link sent to your email address. Keep access to that inbox secure — anyone who can read it can sign in as you. One person per account; do not share accounts.

You may use MapLit anonymously without an account. Anonymous use is limited, and anything you create stays only in that browser until you sign in.

You keep all rights to everything you put into MapLit: your PDFs, your notes, your highlights, your library structure, and your conversations. We claim no ownership of it.

You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you — to store your content, transmit it between your devices, process it with our AI provider so the product can work, and show it back to you. That permission exists to operate MapLit and for nothing else. It ends when you delete the content or your account.

We do not use your content to train AI models, and we do not license it to anyone.

Most research papers are protected by copyright. You are responsible for the files you upload. By uploading a PDF you confirm that you have the right to store a copy of it — because it is open access, because you or your institution licensed it, or because your use is otherwise permitted.

Your uploaded files are private to your account. MapLit does not publish them, share them between users, or make them searchable by anyone else.

If you are a rights holder and believe material stored through MapLit infringes your rights, write to legal@maplit.ai with enough detail to identify the work and the account, and we will act promptly.

MapLit’s labels, placements, summaries, extracted highlights and chat answers are generated by AI models. They are frequently useful and occasionally wrong — including wrong in ways that read as confident and precise.

• Verify before you cite. Check quotes, page numbers, author names, years and venues against the source paper.
• Do not treat AI output as a substitute for reading a paper you intend to rely on, review, or publish about.
• Follow your own institution’s rules on the use of AI tools in research and writing. That is your responsibility, not ours.

Automatic organization of your map is a suggestion, not a judgment. You can always move, rename, merge or undo it.

Do not use MapLit to:

• Break the law, infringe someone’s rights, or upload material you have no right to hold.
• Systematically download, mirror or redistribute publisher content, or build a competing corpus out of it.
• Attempt to access another user’s data, probe or circumvent our security, or interfere with the service.
• Automate, scrape or resell the service, or route third-party traffic through our AI features.
• Evade usage limits, including by creating accounts for that purpose.

Fair use of the AI features is subject to per-account limits so one user cannot exhaust the service for everyone. We may suspend an account that breaks these rules, and will tell you why where we can.

MapLit is early-stage software offered as it is. We do not promise uninterrupted availability, and features may change or be withdrawn as the product develops.

Your data is the part we take most seriously: it is stored in a managed database, your files are stored durably, and you can export a complete copy at any moment. Keeping your own exports of anything critical is still wise.

MapLit is currently free to use, with limits on AI usage and storage. Paid plans will be introduced later. If we introduce a charge for something you are already using, we will tell you in advance and you will be able to export your data and leave without paying.

You can delete your account at any time from your account page. That erases your data, including your stored files. Export first if you want to keep it.

We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaches these terms, or where we are required to by law. Except where that is impossible, we will give you a chance to export your data first.

MapLit is provided without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for loss arising from your reliance on AI output.

The precise liability limits, governing law and dispute-resolution venue are being drafted with counsel and will appear here before public launch. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud — and nothing removes rights you have as a consumer under the law of your country.

When these terms change materially, we will update this page, change its version, and ask you to agree again where that is required. Continuing to use MapLit after a change means you accept the current version.
